Our first day of Summer Academy starts off with a sweet treat! Our friends at Urban Cookie are bringing the sugar rush with some delectable cookies straight from their bakery. The youth will get to decorate these treats, learn the art of baking, and what it takes to run a successful bakery.
The second day of Summer Academy is nothing short of an adventure! The youth will be taking a field trip to Bear Creek Lake in Lakewood for a day of hiking, exploring, and swimming. With 2,624-acres of a park to enjoy, it will be an endless exploration of one of Denver’s many beautiful parks. We end the day with a presentation from our friends at the Black American West Museum who will be educating us on the Black history of Denver and the amazing contributions that reverberate in the present day.
Kicking off on Wednesday, the Denver Library will be visiting Rainbow Alley and sharing some of their favorite book recommendations and services. Afterwards, we will be taking in the beauty of Modern Women/Modern Vision, the upcoming art exhibit at the Denver Art Museum. This art exhibit celebrates 100 images by women artists and their bold and dynamic contributions to photography in the 20th century. We will also take a gander around the more permanent exhibits within the museum.
On Thursday, the stakes are high as the engineering firm of Burns and McDonell will be hosting Rainbow Alley’s very first engineering competition! To cool things off, later in the day, Art from Ashes will be joining us in a spoken word workshop where youth will tap into their artistic core and express themselves amongst their peers.
Last but never the least, Summer Academy will end its first session with a day spent at Ellson Farms, a queer-owned farmstead in Littleton, CO. The youth will be tending to animals, gardening and harvesting, and learning how to run a successful farm! After a day at the farm, we will kick off an end of session celebration with a live band performance by Soy Celeste and special performance from the performers of Dragutante!
On Monday, we will be taking a trip to Cattivella, Denver’s one and only queer and woman owned Italian restaurant! The youth will be getting a tour and presentation on how to run a successful business in the food industry and afterwards, they will get their hands on some fresh ingredients and will be joining Elise Wiggins, the owner of Cattivella, for a fun cooking class. At the end of the day, Black Pride Colorado will be coming to Rainbow Alley for a presentation on the importance of inclusion and diversity in all spaces along with how youth can get involved and make a stand in the face of adversity!
